Westminster, CO · Steel, iron & aluminum
Westminster Gate and Fence Co. builds powder-coated steel, ornamental iron and aluminum fences, plus the driveway and walk gates that go with them. We set posts in concrete, keep the front yard under the city's height limit, and hang gates that still latch after a Front Range winter.
01·Westminster yards
Most fences we build in Westminster go around houses from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, on clay soil, a few miles from the foothills.
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024 five-year estimates) counts about 50,500 housing units in Westminster. Roughly 32,000 of them were built in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, the decades when the city grew out from the old core around 72nd Avenue and Lowell toward Standley Lake, Hyland Hills and the neighborhoods off 120th Avenue. A lot of those houses still have their original wood fence or a run of chain link, and that is usually what a metal fence replaces.
Weather here is hard on fences in specific ways. Spring and summer hail chips powder coat. Heavy spring snow piles against pickets and loads the bottom rail. West winds coming off the foothills push on anything solid, which is one reason open picket designs do well here. The ground matters too: the Colorado Geological Survey notes that swelling clays underlie all of the major Front Range cities, and clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry will slowly tip a post that sits in a shallow footing.
None of this rules out a metal fence. It changes how we build one: deeper footings, posts sized to the gate they carry, and a finish we can touch up when hail or a string trimmer nicks it.

Westminster sorts fences into five classes and sets height limits by where the fence sits on the lot. These are the rules from Municipal Code 11-4-6(P) that shape most residential jobs.
Any fence in front of the front building line, or inside the required front setback, can be 36 inches tall. Class 2 ornamental iron and Class 3 woven wire fences that are more than 50 percent open can go to 42 inches. Decorative post caps are left out of the measurement, so a finial on top does not push you over.
Side yard fences that stay behind the front building line and rear perimeter fences can be any class, up to six feet. A fence sitting on a retaining wall is measured from the ground on the high side to the top of the fence, which catches people with terraced back yards.
The city's residential permit list puts fences over 30 inches on the permit-required list, and the city tells homeowners to check with their HOA and the Planning Division first. We draw the site plan for the permit and the elevation your HOA usually asks for, but the HOA approval itself is in your name.
The code also bans electrically charged fences outright and allows barbed wire only when it is approved on a development plan. Fences and retaining walls cannot block drivers' sight lines at intersections; the city's traffic engineer has the final say on corner lots. Full text: Westminster Municipal Code 11-4-6(P).
04·Pricing
We quote every job from a measured fence line. National cost guides give a fair starting range, and these are the numbers they publish.
$3,000to$8,000
Typical project, average about $5,100

$1,500to$5,000
Gate installation by material

Angi also breaks metal fencing down by style: about $30 to $50 a linear foot for spear-top, $25 to $40 for flat-top, and $40 to $70 for picket designs. Those are national numbers, not Westminster quotes. The things that move a real quote:

05·Materials
Most people say "wrought iron" and mean any black picket fence. There are three different metals behind that look, and they behave differently here.
Will not rustLight, rust-proof and the easiest to live with near pools, sprinklers and snowmelt. It flexes more than steel, so we keep spans short and do not use it for wide driveway gates.
Most of our fencesPre-galvanized steel pickets and rails with a powder coat on top. Stiffer and stronger than aluminum for the money, which is why most of our residential fences and gates are steel.
Custom workSolid bar stock, scrolls and custom shapes, welded to order. Heavy and handsome, but bare iron rusts quickly once its paint is chipped, so it needs a finish it can keep.
06·How a job runs
The panels go up fast. Most of the time on a fence job goes into the layout and the footings.
01We walk the fence line with you, look at grade, sprinkler heads, trees and the old fence, and check the lot against the city or county height limits and any HOA rules you send us.
02String lines, post marks and gate swings go on the ground first. If the property line is unclear, a survey comes before any digging, not after.
03Colorado 811 marks buried utilities before we dig. Posts go in augered holes, set in concrete, plumb in both directions, with gate posts sized up for the load.
04Panels are bracketed or welded to the posts, racked to follow gentle slopes or stepped on steep ones, with an even gap at the bottom.
05Hinges, latches and drop rods are adjusted so the gate closes and latches on its own weight or spring. Pool gates get self-closing hinges and a latch high enough to meet barrier rules.
06We touch up any coating nicked during install, haul off the old fence and spoils, and walk the line with you before we call it done.
A straight 150-foot backyard fence with one walk gate is usually a two to three day install. Concrete needs time to cure before a heavy gate goes on its posts, so driveway gates often get hung on a later visit.
07·Good to know
The weather details that change how a fence in Westminster should be built.
Westminster's heaviest snows often come in March and April, wet and heavy. Snow drifting against a fence pushes on the pickets, and plows or shovels throw more against front fences along the street. Open picket designs shed it better than solid panels, and a 2-inch gap at the bottom keeps the bottom rail out of the slush.
A hard hailstorm can chip powder coat on the top rail and finials. On aluminum that is cosmetic. On steel, a chip that reaches bare metal will start to rust, and the rust creeps under the coating. Touch-up paint in the fence's color, put on the same season, stops it. We leave a can with every steel job.
Wind loads a fence by how solid it is. A picket fence lets most of it through. Add privacy slats or a solid steel panel and the posts carry far more load, so they need to be heavier and set deeper. We will tell you if a design you like needs a heavier post.
Clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry works on fence posts year after year. Footings below the local frost depth, concrete crowned to shed water away from the post, and sprinkler heads aimed away from the fence line all help gates keep their alignment.
08·Before you call
Ten minutes of homework makes the first call shorter and the quote more accurate.
Closing papers often include an improvement location certificate or a plat showing the lot lines. If the old fence was not on the line, the new one does not have to follow it.
Many Westminster subdivisions specify fence style, color and height, sometimes stricter than the city. Ask the HOA for the current design guidelines and the approval form.
Count the gates and measure the openings: walk gates, trash-can gates, a mower gate, a driveway. Gates change the post layout more than anything else.
Colorado law requires a call to Colorado 811 before digging so buried gas, electric and fiber lines get marked. Sprinkler lines are private and are not marked, so we probe for them by hand near the heads.
09·Hiring
A welder can build a beautiful gate but may not want to dig 40 post holes. A general fence company may sell metal as a sideline and install it like wood. We only build in metal, so posts, welds, hinges and coatings are what we spend our days on.
10·Service area
All of Westminster on both sides of the Adams and Jefferson county line, plus the towns along US 36, I-25 and Federal Boulevard.
Inside Westminster we work everywhere from the older blocks near Westminster Station and 72nd Avenue to the 1980s and 1990s subdivisions near Standley Lake, Legacy Ridge and the Hyland Hills golf course, and the newer homes north of 120th. Standley Lake Regional Park alone covers about 3,000 acres on the west side of the city, so lots that back onto open space are common. Those fences often have extra rules, so ask your HOA before you pick a design.
11·Getting a quote
Call (983) 229-3629 or use the callback form. Westminster Gate and Fence Co. will ask for the address, the rough length of fence, the height you want, how many gates and whether there is an old fence to remove.
Then we come out, measure the line, look at grade and drainage, and check the city or county rules for that lot. The written quote lists post size and spacing, footing depth, panel style and height, each gate with its hardware, removal and haul-off, and who handles the permit.
Walking the old fence lineFAQ·Straight answers
Short answers. If your yard is the odd one out, call and describe it.
Usually yes. The city's residential permit list says fences over 30 inches need a building permit, and applications go through the eTRAKiT portal. HOA approval is separate, and many Westminster subdivisions have their own fence standards.
36 inches in front of the front building line. Ornamental iron and woven wire fences that are more than 50 percent open can go to 42 inches, and decorative post caps are not counted in the height (Westminster Municipal Code 11-4-6(P)).
Aluminum cannot rust, so it suits pool areas, sprinkler spray and low-maintenance yards. Galvanized, powder-coated steel is stronger and stiffer, which matters for driveway gates, dog runs and long spans. Both outlast wood in Colorado's dry sun.
Often. We check that the gate swings freely, that the hinges and post can carry an operator, and whether power is nearby or a solar kit makes more sense. Some older gates need reinforcement first.
